What are tmp files ? I have lot of them located at C:\Documents and Settings-Administrator-Local Settings?

These files - *.tmp take a lot of my disk space. Can I safely delete these files without any harm to my programs? I have Windows XP professional, version 2002, Service Pack 2.

Other files located in this C:\Documents and Settings-Administrator-Local Settings are *.xml, *.wmf, *.VBS, *.log, *.txt, *.INF, *.cat, *.qm, *.bmp, *.DLL. Only these files *.tmp takes the bulk of my hard disk space.

These are called temporary file. Many softwares (including windows) creates temporary files when needed. You can delete them without any hesitation. They are absolutely unnecessary.
Reply:tmp files are temporary files that applications create and sometimes don't clean up properly. It is safe to delete them, but if some are in use, it won't let you delete them until that program is done with them.
