World of warcraft?

I have downloaded the game onto my PC last night, but this morning I downloaded the patch 2.4.0. Now I am getting the message "The file C:/programmefiles/commonfiles/blizzarden... could not be created." It's telling me to uninstall then reinstall the game which I've done but still get the same message. Am I able to download a patch from another website/source. Any help much appreciated.

Reply:download.com may also have the patch that you are looking for.

On a side note, try removing or turning off all of your addons when you run the game. All old addons are out of date with the latest upgrade to 2.4. Some may still work but best to rule that out and then turn them back on one at a time.

You may also try the Technical support forum off of WoW's website. Go to forums.worldofwarcraft.com and select the support option. Maybe someone else is having the same problem as you. I know I found a few answers on the forum boards after the latest patch came out.

when i downloaded warrock from all of the websites there are some files like textures or lighting i have vista what can i do?

Your first problem you cant download or dont have right? (judging by your poor language)

In that case you have no alternative but to re-download. Unless you can download the individual files seperatly (try googling them) or simplly go to the official war rock site

I understand the error, but I'm quite confused why you included your downloaded history — or is that part of the error? If it is, to the best of my knowledge, and I hate to say this, but I think your best solution is to uninstall LimeWire and make sure to do the installation correctly.

Uninstall Limewire and forget about it.

Limewire is a virus and spyware downloader.

To fix your problem you best do a very good virus scan and spyware scan.

AVG Free and AVast Free will remove any virus limewire has downloaded. AD-Aware 2007 and Spybot Search and Destroy will remove the Spyware.

AVG anti Root kit - Will remove any root kits.

If you had a choice between these two, which would you choose?

I have four months to get more training in something so that I can move my family out of our current situation. My two choices are : Media Design Technology and Accounting. Both will get me a certificate of completion. Accounting is simply accounting. Media Design Technology includes: Illustrator, InDesign, Publisher, Pagemaker, QuarkXpress, Photoshop, Director, PHP, Premiere, After Effects, Flash, XML, VB.NET, ADO.NET, C#, CGI/PERL, Java, JSP, and ColdFusion MX.

Which would you do? I want to be able to work from home for a second income because I want to move to a smaller community and not have to rely on their economy.

If you had a choice between these two, which would you choose?
Go with accounting. Your job choices later will be much greater and more diverse. Every company needs an accountant, even if it is only the sole proprietor doing the bookwork. I worked at a large, fortune 500 company and there were more accounting degrees than IT degrees, or information technology as they called it back then. Even tiny businesses need an accountant and you could easily buy software (Quickbooks, tax prep., etc.) to start doing side work for various people in your off time. You could work from home as a bookkeeper just as easily as a media design expert.

I doubt every company needs a media design expert. But worse than that, you would have to continuously keep abreast of technology as it changes. Far more than accounting. You would be spending extra time keeping current.

Go with accounting. Easier to get a job in accounting. Easier to get side jobs in your spare time. And the best of all, you could be an accountant in a company that specializes in media design. That way you would learn more about media design while having the security of the accounting position.

Reply:It is difficult to find an Accounting job from taking a few accounting courses. It is easier to find a job after taking a few media design courses.

Media Design is a different story. I would not learn programming, multimedia and publications. I would pick one of these components. Multimedia would be the ideal choice, as this is the easiest to have contract jobs and work from home. Publications is useless unless you have writing skills. Programming is pointless unless you have in-depth computer and data structure knowledge.

I know all those programs and languages you mentioned under Media Design Technology. I know the value and marketability of those skillsets.

Based on these skills could I expect to be able to work from home?

Based on these skills could I expect to be able to work from home?
My sister has works at home as a web designer, making very good money. I believe she is experienced in some of those programs. She makes 90K a year. She started by doing small jobs, programs, invitations, lettering and it just took off! Alot by word of mouth, she did some advertising but not much.

Reply:Here's some reasons most people cannot work from home as freelance consultants:

1. You can program, administer a network, and administer a database, but that doesn't mean you can sell yourself. Consulting companies have sales staff whose full time job is to market you to clients. They're good at it. It's what they do.

2. You're private individual, not a company, so you lack the same enterprise-level reputation that a company comes with. Potential clients will be leery of your ability to put enough resources into the project and to secure additional resources if needed.

3. Insurance. So, you install your code or network hardware or DB design and everything takes a crap (let's face it, it happens) and the company loses $25,000 in revenue before it's back up. They file suit. What happens then?

4. What happens when the clients want to take a look at your operation before signing up? Are you going to show them around your living room and home office?

5. Competition. There's someone in India with that exact same resume who will do it for $15/hour. Or some 13-year-old that will do it for a flat $100.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but just be aware of those things. The number one hurdle to overcome is being able to market and sell yourself and your skill set.

I looked over this log and it appears to be a pretty much standard and nothing suspicious. Though I would tell you if you are going to run Java at least download script block for your Firefox browser. That and McAffe anti virus SUCKS. Try Avast Anti-virus. It's free and does a MUCH better job at blocking, detecting viruses and spyware.

You aren't EVER going to remove NT_Kernel. It's the core of Windows XP. The Kernel contains all the vital instructions and programming that allows your computer to be something more than an expensive paperweight. Windows will NOT allow you to delete it short of formatting the HDD. You can however change your windows update options from the control panel to not update or notify you when updates are available but not download them and auto install.

Reply:The site you're referring to utilizes several diff languages and concepts, most importantly, a backend CMS (content management system) One you might try is phpnuke, it's open source. It basically runs via php/mysql database. Or other database driven extensions, cgi, perl, asp etc etc...view the source at the site.
Reply:With just: HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Flash, PHP, MySQL, you can make really nice and professional websites.
Reply:ASP is microsoft's so you'd need their software to run those scripts. PHP is free to use so I would suggest that.

HTML and XHTML are beginner languages and while excellent for simple webpages, they are not as dynamic as a server side language like PHP. MYSQL is handy to learn as it is necessary for databases. You need those when you're creating forums, web-based games, etc.

CSS is great at decorating your webpages. It should go alongside HTML (if your webpage does not need server side scripts), or alongside PHP if your webpage needs to be more dynamic than simple HTML.

Flash can also spruce up a webpage, but use it sparingly. It can cause lag on older computers and can be annoying if used incorrectly. Users will have to install Flash player to be able to view them and in computers where they do not have admin priviledges, it becomes troublesome.

The best languages in my opinion? PHP to code the page, MYSQL to control the databases, CSS to decorate the pages, and flash for things that can't be done in the other three.

i never learned javascript personally, although I use scripts that i have found in code libraries. you need to know the basics of how to call a script from html, that's all

Flash is wonderful; it's my favourite tool and I use it a lot. It's not easy to learn, but once you know it, you can make cool little games.

Ajax is not for beginners

php + mySQL are necessary for storing and reading info from a database. the scripts you need to save, store and edit values are not too complex, but I have found that debugging errors can be a BIG task when the database isn't working

Programming/Design: What to learn first?
I'd go with Dynamic HTML (webpage design), then php %26amp; mysql this will cover some database design stuff that can be implemented within your webpages.

You will want SQL as well if your working with databases.

For building servers, Windows Server, IIS6. Skip the TCP/IP, this is networking protocols. Perl and CGI may be useful for web server programming also.
Reply:If you want to be sucessful in web based programming, I suggest taking dynamic html, php and mysql, and web design and graphics first. Then I recommend going into object oriented analysis (though, this ties in directly to php, so it's your call) and java. XML will help you with making your designs for your websites easier and nicer. Everything else is addon stuff (with the exception of oracle, which you might need if you plan on doing stuff specifically for that). TCP/IP is more hardware oriented.

There are two methods mentioned:

1. Right-click on the RSS button and then "Copy Shortcut."

~ OR ~

2. Click on the RSS button and then copy the address from the web address bar.

It seems like you got a little confused. They're actually two different things to do. So just copy the address of that page instead of trying to find another button in it. (By the way, some sites use an RSS buttons and others use an XML button. They both work.)

Then you can paste the web address onto your 360 feeds list, and you'll be ready to go.

How to properly remove malware?

my laptop has a lot of malware in it all in the program files (c:\program files\) xml, xmod, xsofware, zsearch, data 19, e2g a whole bunch of stuff. i know i could put in the OS disc (XP home) and repair windows. would i still be able to type in program files in the repair windows screen and delete these malware files or should i rename them. If you could please give me help that would be great. DETAILED ANSWERS PLEASE! if it helps i used malware immunizer 1.5 a free malware sweeper.

Get adaware free and spybot. Run them, between the two they should clean up 99% of your problems.

Reply:Well if you don't want to reformat %26amp; rebuild your hard drive and are willing to spend some time doing it manually, give this procedure a shot. I haven't had it fail yet.

All you need for info is the name of the "malware" you're trying to get rid of. You'll need to do this procedure for each piece of malware you are infected with. Give it a shot.

DELETING PROBLEM FILES - SOFTWARE -MALWARE FROM YOUR PC

Let’s assume the problem File/Software/Virus, etc. is named “W32spybot” and you want to remove it from your PC.

Where ever you see the name “W32spybot” below, you will need to insert the actual name of the file/software/virus, etc. that you are trying to remove.

Click on Start %26gt; Settings %26gt; Control Panel %26gt; Add/Remove Programs and remove any “W32SPYBOT” programs residing there.

Now click on Start %26gt; Search %26gt; For Files or Folders %26gt; All Files and Folders

type in “W32SPYBOT” in the top box and let the computer do a complete search of your hard drive.

When it is done, click on Edit at the top of the window and click on Select All

Then click on File and click on Delete. It will ask you if you want to remove them. Click on Yes.

If you want to REALLY finish the job:

NOTE: DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE IN THE REGISTRY OTHER THAN WHAT I MENTION HERE.

If you are not familiar with editing the registry and you do other things you may give yourself some big headaches.

Click on Start %26gt; Run %26gt;

type in regedit

Click once on the very top directory in the left hand pane to hilite it.

Hold down Ctrl + F; this will open a search window

Type in “W32SPYBOT” and then click on Find Next

When it finds a “W32SPYBOT” entry, right click on it and select Delete and YES. (Do this whether it is a folder in the left hand pane or if it is an entry in the right hand pane)

Hold down Ctrl + F again and repeat the process until you have cleaned your registry of all “W32SPYBOT” items.

This is a bit of a tedious process so hang in there.

When you think you have it all out. Go back up to the top directory in the left pane, hilite it, and search for “W32SPYBOT” once again just to make sure you didn't miss any instances of it.

Once you have completely removed all instances of W32spybot from the Registry, reboot your PC. This will reset the registry without all the “W32SPYBOT” entries and you should be rid of your problem.
Reply:You unfortunately can't remove malware by just deleting files that look suspicious or by renaming them.

Speaking from personal experience, I had both my home computers attacked by all kinds of malware, spyware, and trojan programs - even though I had Norton installed on one computer, and McAfee on the other.

I did find a program called Spyware Doctor that was able to remove MalwareAlarm and all the other infections, and I took screenshots along the way in hopes of helping other people get their systems back to normal as well (link below).
Reply:I've not heard of Malware Immunizer, and I must say I'm a little suspicious of programs I don't know about. Here's some steps you might find useful.

3. download ccleaner (http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)

4. clear your temp files using ccleaner.

5. run spybot and ad-aware until they don't show any new detections. This may require rebooting several times.

This is a quick-and-dirty method, and may not completely remove what you've got.

When you're clean, make sure you're not using programs that contain spyware (Kazaa/limewire are a couple).

Run Windows Updates! Make sure you have all security updates marked on their site - especially ones listed as crititcal.

Get a good antivirus/antispyware solution... I know a lot of people think AVG is great, but honestly, it's really prone to false positives, so you might want to try something else.

You are missing some things.

Algorithms courses that are language independent are some of the most useful things that you could possibly take. These include searches, sorts, geometic algorithms, graph algorithms. If you don't have at least two courses of this, you don't have enough.

Languages are a dime a dozen. Knowing how to program is the hard thing.

Reply:The trick is just to learn as much as you can. In addition to what you're already doing, try installing GNU/Linux or UNIX and learn how to use the command line. The Microsoft Programming Suite is a good start, but is no substitute for programming on the command line. You'll find it will give you much more control, and you will have UNIX programming experience, something that is becoming much rarer as Microsoft continues to use ruthless tactics to take over.

The skills you have listed are pretty common. However, they are a good start. Consider learning how to use UNIX. Since it's harder to find someone who knows how to use it, UNIX technicians are often paid much more than regular Windows programmers. But it all depends on your place of employment.

Remember, you can never learn too much. At least, not with what you're talking about.

I have read that many IT professionals begin their careers at help desk and/or tech support. I will be concentrating exclusively on database, will I need to begin at help desk in order to become a DBA? Through grad school I will be taking a six month, full time paid internship (hopefully doing database work). How much would an Oracle OCA certification help?

Beginning an IT career?
That may be partially true but not completely. I work for a systems integrations firm and it looks like you have some of the skills to easily becomming a .net developer or a sql developer. I think you have the skills to take an associate level position as is in a IT integrations company. Focus on the learning the following pieces to add on to what you know:

Java Servlets

Apache Tomcat and/or Struts

SQL Server

.Net

etc........

I dont know what location you want to end up in someday but check out companies such as MSI (www.msiinet.com) they use these kinds of technologies for their customers.

Hello there!

I have been offered a web design job with a pretty high salary, except they emphasis knowing Javascript, ouch. I already all the basics such as html,xml, css, and C programming which I know would come in handy for online databases using php/mysql. Except I never really got to covering javascript thoroughly, I didnt taking classes for this while in college, I majored in international business, so most of web design learning came through my own studies, and of course some web-design classes, but nothing too big, I also took a programming class. So what I need are some resources for learning javascript, something that is clear and cut, and can learn in a matter of days, I will study it from dusk to dawn, I just don't know where to look, any recommendations?

The quickest ramp-up on some basics will prob'ly be the w3schools link, but it has its flaws. It ain't gonna happen in a few days... the topic's just too big.

I'm doing my final year as a computer scientist and my final year project revolves around HTML, XHTML, XML, Javascript and CSS. This website has been a good help and it is easy for beginners to digest. There's a thin book called "Javascript - In easy steps" which is good too but if you're a more hands on person, then I would recommend the website.

You should learn XHTML as well. Its similar to HTML but stricter and its better because HTML can be quite messy and sometimes you forget to close tags etc but XHTML forces you to close tags once opened so your codes won't be too messy.

Your portfolio must be attractive and all your website code must validate.

You must be confident and able to present yourself well at a panel interview. If you can't do this, work alongside someone who can.

You need to see some real-life examples of successful and unsuccessful web proposals. If you get rejected ask for feedback and look at what the successful applicant created for them. Could you do what they did?

Are you specialising in one sector? You need to understand that sector's ways of working, how they make decisions, how they view risks and innovation, their likely resources etc.

Are you a one-man band? Find other freelancers, graphic artists, coders etc who could collaborate on larger projects.

Is there a local group of web professionals that meet up occasionally near you? Go along.

It depends what you mean by 'experience'. If it's work experience, then definitely. (6 years is a long time and will even qualify you in some senior development positions).

If it's just hobby experience, the number of years become irrelevant and you may have to show the products you have made. Either way, they will probably test you on the spot, produce some pseudocode and/or design.

ok i wnt insight from a java programmer c++ whoever has been around it for awhile .......... Im going for my degree in information and data security but i like the programming world. So independently im gonna take some classes but i have seen as i been trying to learn it that there is alot involved scripting need to be known in the unix/windows world also a knowledge of html, xml E.T.C. is essential. Somebody who has experience programming with java give me some insight on what is essential in learning this language or concept i should say even if that means math classes that pertain to programming

Java learning procedure?
If you had to learn encryption theory in order to get your "information and data security" degree, then you should have enough math to learn any programming language you want.

If not, if you just had to learn about the major PKE packages, security techniques, common attacks, how they work, what their strengths and weaknesses are, etc. I would recommend a good solid background in mid-level college algebra, something that covers the basics of boolean algebra and gets you used to working with abstract expressions.
Reply:One of the most important things in information and data security is communication, so practice the phrasing on your questions. Seriously! Most security folks spend a lot of time communicating in e-mail, face to face, and on the phone!

I think from a programming standpoint, know how the various types of encryption work, and how to create an encrypted channel through data communication. Understand the issues around data at rest and data in transit.

It seems through out my school life I will be learning a LOT of different langauges... Visual basic, C++, java, SQL, HTML, XML, ASP, .NET, C#, Linux and more... Its all a bit overwhelming... As well as the fact that I enjoy doing Php, Python, Macromedia Flash and using Apache on my free time, what should I do? I mean the things I would personally like to focus on are Java, C++ because I really enjoy doing it.. Same with Macromedia Flash and Php or Python.. I love working in those things as well. But I love programming in general, I will really be willing to work in anything! Idunno, what should I do? Oh if it helps my interests are Databases, creating games and network type programming.

I got a BS in CompSci in 1983 and an MS in 85. I was taught PL/C, Fortran, APL and SNOBOL. I didn't touch a terminal for 2 years. I used computer cards.

Back then, C++ didn't exist. Neither did Java, XML, C# or any of the other stuff you mentioned.

But what I did gain from school was the ability to keep learning and improve my skills. I've been in software development since I graduated. I've learned C++, Java, UML and Design Patterns through work training or just on my own. I'm constantly learning new stuff. This week I programmed the Visitor Design Pattern for the first time and wished I had known the technique years ago.

I've adapted, and you will need to as well. By the time you graduate half of what you mentioned above will be gone or radically changed.

Your school will take a lot of our decision making away through required courses. Fill in our free electives with the courses that excite you. Don't forget to take fun non-computer courses as well.

Reply:I'd say - focus on the areas you enjoy most ! Developing the logic is more important than the actual coding itself. Once you are confident with that, writing code in any language will be a piece of cake as it is just the syntax that is different. I would say - Being perfect in C and C++/Java is like a good foundation. Learning the other things in your free time is certainly helpful.

Usually, we use assembler to control IO device in PC with more 'high' programming language (eg. Delphi, Pascal, C++).

You can use real assembler compiler like Turbo Assembler to make some software (under Ms-Dos environment), but its feel like you want to build a tower with a hand.

in now days, most of high programming language have many function/procedure to control IO device, so we don't need assembler anymore,

except if you want to build device driver for some hardware which mean : you work on hardware manufacture.

Hi,

I have been working for about 10 years as a computer programmer and in all this time I went through, a bit of Java, Oracle, SqlServer (97, 2000, 2005), C#, Compact Framework, XML, HTML, ActionScript, among others technologies and frameworks.

I have been trying to focus on JEE / Spring + Oracle, but in almost every job I had (4 if I count the current one) I got the job with the commitment I would be working with Java Technologies (Which I have always enjoyed and spent a vast amount of time learning) and I always have accepted to earn a bit less in order to get on with Java. But invariably I end up working on different technologies which made me frustrate.

Because in the past 2 years I haven't been working with Java (neither studying it), I would need to get professional advices about what kind of skills for a Spring/J2EE is the UK market eager for. I am in the UK for about 1 year now (Working on the embedded side - MS stuffs).

Maybe my fate is not to work with Java ;)

Pascal is used more as a High School programming language because it deals well with logic. When you delve into deeper studies you will most likely not use Pascal.

It has been my experience that your programming code of choice depends on where your interests lie. In your question you mentioned code that is used for scripting, as well as code that is used for hard core programming. Most colleges are evolving away from the Pascal and FORTRAN classes into C/C+, Java, using these compilations to build cgi scripts for the web.

As a software engineer I can tell you in my field, which is multimedia presentation and training, ActionScript (Flash), JavaScript, HTML/XML, and some server side scripting like Php are important in a Windows neutral environment, while C# and Visual Basic are very important especially when dealing in a Net 2.0 environment.

The field is pretty wide, and logic is logic, syntax is syntax. Designer code will be out there and touted as something special, but if you know your field of interest you should maintain your focus and get some actual experience. Know some scripting and some basic hard coding and put it into practice.

Windoze has a default setting to restart when an error occurs.

Reply:Try deleting everyting possible in your two TEMP folders.

Folder 1: C:\temp

Folder 2: C:\WINDOWS\Temp

If there is an error message that says you cannot delete the file because it may be in use at the minute, click okay and don't delete it.

Also, open up your computer (when it's off) and dust it out. Sometimes random restarting is due to the dirtyness of the inside of a pc.

BSOD-- blue screen of death? why are you dual booting with Vista and XP?? pick one or the other, for my money I would remove Vista and stick with XP. one of your os is causing the problem or you have a virus. Have you tried googling the error messages and finding out a bit more?

What you need to do, is when the computer bluescreen you need to write down what it says on that screen, not all of it, but in the upper 1/3 of the screen there should be a one line error messgae, thats the important part.

Google that and it'll tell you what you need to know.

At first I'd only bluescreen when playing a game, but recently I've been bluescreening at random times, such as while just listening to music on iTunes or browsing around on Firefox.

I've run spyware and virus scans since this problem started with no luck. I haven't been able to read what the bluescreen says (besides Stop then a bunch of 0's), and when I reboot, I get a message from Microsoft Windows

The deaddead code often indicates a driver issue. Have you looked at the dump file to see if it points to a particular driver? Also, have you been downloading and applying patches? If not, start by hitting Windows Update and applying all of the patches. Next, try updating all of your hardware drivers.

If you do keep up with patches and drivers, it could be that you recently downloaded a bad one. Check and see what drivers may have been updated shortly before you started having this problem and either see if there's a newer driver or roll back to a previous version.

It also appears that Windows Update KB943899 has caused BSOD problems on many laptops, particularly Dells. If you have a laptop, try removing that update.

This also appears to be an error code associated with the Dell XPS m1330 and the version of the NETw5v32.sys installed on it. There's some helpful info at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthre...

Just to be thorough, download and run memtest to make sure it's not bad RAM.

Solution,get rid of Vista , there are tremenous problems with it , Go Buy XP, or 2000 pro service pack 4 . Microsoft error messages are famed for being useless. If it only happens when you leave it alone for long periods of time then it would suggest to me that there may be a complication when entering hibernation mode. To test it you could change your power settings Start -%26gt; Settings -%26gt; Control Panel -%26gt; Power Options then click change plan settings for your current plan. Set it so that it will hibernate in 1-2 minutes and leave it. If it crashes then you know the problem.

Other than that I'm not sure if I could assist any further other than saying that I used Vista x64 and I used to get blue screens when my PC tried to hibernate and I was using downloading programs (particularly BitComet).

I see you do not have service pack 2. You should set for auto updates. Did you install Vista and what version, or did it come preinstalled? What brand lap top, how much ram?

Mini .dmp file will have the info for why the app crashed. You will need to email the dump file from the application that crashed to its vendor so they can analize what caused the crash. It might be a software bug or a problem with your hardware, they will have to inform you either way. ( try and open the .dmp file in a text or binary file editor, might learn something from it. :-)

Sounds like a hardware issue, possibly drivers. Perhaps video drivers since its happening when you're watching DVDs or when your computer comes back from sleep mode. VGA or DVI? I've had similar problems that came from using a DVI connection on VIsta that resulted from display drivers.

Actually, windows vista is not actually a good OS, sometimes it fails due to physical memory overuse. according to microsoft, 512 mb is the minimum requirements, but for encoding puposes only. some gaming softwares are not also compatible with windows vista, but with windows xp instead. You must a have 2GB physical memory and a minimum of 1.6ghz speed of processor for its better performance.
Reply:I have had that problem many times before. What i do to fix it was boot up into the windows xp disk or vista disk, and go to recovery counsel and then type:

fixmbr

fixboot

then try booting up into your os, and if it doesnt work still, then go back to recovery counsel and type chkdsk

I would say you have a virus, so download these 3 things, disconnect the internet, install them and run them and let them do their job. It should be fine after that, but I would say its a virus since it originates from the Temp folder.

The only way to know for sure what is causing the problem, is to use microsofts debugging tools to check the crash dump file. These tools will tell you which driver (by filename) caused the problem. The file name will end with a .sys extension, and will be at the bottom of the dump report with a "Probably caused by"

Tools below. Once you know exactly what is causing it by filename, google the filename to find out what uses the file and look for updates relating to it.

This may not be your modem. Because of Vista's problems with the Internet, both BT and Virgin have had to bring out patches to download so Vista can run on their systems.

You better go to internet options and delete cookies and delete history and that might clear it up. If not then you may want to take it to your computer manufacturer but check to see in your control panel - add/remove software programs and make sure everything that is running should be running and nothing there is out of the ordinary.

im running vista ultimate. the only two reasons i can think i got a BSOD is my cpu over heated, and a fault OS disk.

If the memtest doesn't show any errors after a while, check your drivers and make sure you have the most updated drivers from the company that made your motherboard and other hardware components.

Your temperatures look good, so they'd have to climb quite a bit to cause any problems. Also, I've never seen a blue screen from an overheating processor. Normally it's just a thermal shutdown where the computer cuts power to the processor to save it from burning up. You shouldn't see a blue screen error if that happens.

One of the sticks is probably bad. Take one out and run it. If the problem continues switch them. If it works, the one not in the computer is bad and it needs to be replaced.

I been using the trial version of nero and now it wont burn or just half stop. Sometimes it sseems like it is burning but when I eject my dvd it still runs. Also I reinstalled it too many times so dont ask me to do that and now when i do it gives me this errorcode.

Okay, I am not gonna lie, it sounds like you don't really have a grasp on Active Directory.

First, all AD objects are stored in the AD database. You can't access it via xml or txt files. Batch file won't do you any good either. AD programming is in the very confusing ADSI, and to an extent in VB. Unless you are creating hundredes of users at a time with totals in the thousands, you might not find scripting worthwhile.

To edit user properties, you simply open AD Users and Computers (in administrative tools) and expand the users OU. Then right click on the user and select properties. Here you can edit most anything about a user. If you need more help you might want to search a more in depth forum than yahoo answers.

The built in Rich Text control handles images and hyperlinks, you only have to hookup a few event handlers to deal with them. I'm sure if you go into help in visual studio and search for topics on the RichText control, you'll find more information, probably articles and sample code.

Use a literal. Open up your web page and drag a literal control from the Toolbox to wherever you want the html to appear on the page, then in Page_Load add code to set the literals Text member:

I'm currently working on application development, the application will be in two languages -%26gt; English is default, how can I construct the application so that when the user selects it's preferred language from the drop down menu the appropriate language shows after he logs in?

I'm talking about the interface, ex, button, ..., etc

Is there a way to store all keywords in a xml file and then call xml files based on user input like eng would call english xml file therefore the user will see the interface in english version and vica versa

This dynamically sets the productName depending on which section of the xml is available.
Reply:You are creating more work for yourself than is necessary. C# has Localization built into it and if you are using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, it has excellent support for this.

Just set the "Localizable" property for the form to true. Select the language for the form you want to work with. Once you select a language, you can setup the labels and text you want changed for that locale. Visual Studio will automatically generate resource files (one for each language).

You can then programmatically change the locale at run time using a menu item as you suggest. Additionally, the program can use the default locale configured in Microsoft Windows when the application first starts.

I would like to learn the above online if possible, I have a (ebook - CHM) Sams - Teach Yourself PHP MySQL and Apache in 24 Hours - 2003 book currently. I know a bit of HTML.

Also .NET or JAVA? I know a bit of C and VB6 and a lot of informix and UNIX . But not too sure which route to take. Should I learn a bit more C first? I know .NET is not a language as such.

I am a informix programmer but I have about 18 months left at work before we are all replaced with JDE packages.

Any answers would be appricated.

Books from WROX publications are amongst the best for Apache, MySQL and PHP. As for .NET, you're probably referring to programming in C# or VB or J# to develop applications that target the .NET framework. While it would be a good idea to get a hold of programming in .NET languages, you're probably better off on the JAVA track if you're planning to remain in the same company as they're switching over to JDE.

Both .NET languages and JAVA are object oriented languages so it's a better idea to use C++ as the base(Instead of C). Once you've got a hold of concepts like data abstraction, inheritance, ploymorphism etc, and a touch of different types of functions and function calls and their usage, you can move onto Java(In your case, J2EE) or any of the .NET languages.

If it's JAVA, there's a book by Herbert Schildt called JAVA COMPLETE REFERENCE which gives you a good start and for advanced programming in Java, THINKING IN JAVA is a good option.

As for any of the .NET languages, the quickest way is to get a hold of the language by watching microsoft's webcasts (you'll need to sign up for the modules that you're interested in) and then you're out in the field with the MSDN LIBRARY and ofcourse, forums. For advanced programming levels, you can attend a couple of TECH-ED sessions that gets you plenty of learning as you would in a crash course with enough time to get your doubts cleared from Microsoft's product development managers themselves. I think there's one coming up in Barcelona, Spain sometime soon. Apart from videos and webcasts, Wrox publications have good books on most of the popular NET languages as well.

Reply:.net is for enterprise programming and so is JAVA if you want to write websites then PHP is usally the language of choice. Unless it is a huge enterprise that needs a scallable solution like .net or java. If you know UNIX then i would recommend then LAMP way, because you already know it. LINUX/UNIX people are still in high demand when you can prove yourself. So learn PHP then learn JAVA, PHP is rougly bassed off C so you may be able to pick it up fairly quickly. Java from that point should be easy to pick up and if you know C C# should be real easy to pickup. Because .net is not language netural meaning all languages are firstcalls citizens you could easily code C# code that would work with VB.NET components or vice versa that goes for (managed C++, J#, COBOL.NET, FORTAN.NET, PERL.NET, PHP.NET).

For php resources php.net offers the best documentation because of the wiki. Mysql.com offers one of the best refrences for documentation. CPAN for PERL modules and documentation is good to. BOOKS: The WROX series on PHP and MySQL is a good text as well.

to add also quickly is to join ACM (Asociation for Computting machinist) or the IEEE membership is open to anyone and membership (student is usually below 50$) they give you access to a wide array of courses and books that you can view online and read at your liesure. They were apart of the SLC but now its under control of courseview. These are one of the best resouces for Programmers and Computing Professionals they include books on courses on many types of technologies (LINUX/WINDOWS/SECURITY/CISCO/IOS/ETC).

The question is misleading when it states the "automate tasks" portion. Although you can use Windows Services for this, they still require you to log-in to the Windows Machine to run them. An XML Web Service does not require log-in at the other endpoint (i.e. where it's being hosted), only authentication if set explicitly, and you can call methods to run "tasks" or logic that will do something for you.
Reply:The correct answer is B. When you create/install a windows service you specify which account the service should run under (normally Local Service). If you require you can run most services under a specific machine/domain account depending on your needs.

The best thing is probably to have a good letter of recommendation, and samples of your coding. Otherwise a lot of internet online classes these days, you should go get some certifications that way if all else fails.

I've been experimenting with the jclark's expat parser. I compiled it on linux, and it works just great. However, finding tags and data by implementing the callback functions in c language is cumbersome. Has anybody written code that uses the expat callback's in such a way as to build a hierarchical tree, without using DOM,schema, and sax, that can be traversed.My purpose, just enough to traverse branches and find leafs of a xml documents without using DOM, schema, and sax, and i also want help regarding how to convert a xml document to a hierachical tree which contains tags values. thanks

I'm a computer engineering student and I'm still trying to master the basics of C++. I just started learning about classes and memory management and arrays. In my book those are the last few topics. There are further topics on online tutorials and such and I plan to move on to Java next.

I've been doing Software Engineering for twenty plus years. Here's what I think:

C++ may be the most complex language you'll learn. You will need to learn a lot of the supporting libraries as mentioned by OOP's. PERL, Python and PHP are scripting languages and you can learn them as you need them. I think Java is important to learn, it is a delightful and useful language. The syntax is similar to C++.

The web based languages (HTML, Javascript) are worth learning if you plan to do a lot of internet stuff.

XML is useful and easy. In many situations.

I have to say that once you have C++ under your belt other languages come pretty easy. They all have loops conditions and variables, many support object oriented programming. I have never learned PERL, Python or PHP to any degree, but can figure out how to use them when there is a particular need. I've used all three at one time or another.

Visual Basic is just a shell, so to speak, over the DotNet CLR. So, it is no more useful than Java#, C# or managed C++. And since you will know C++, C# and managed C++ are a matter of learning their DotNet quirks.

Mostly, as a software engineer, you will come to a job and have to learn the application and particular libraries the employer is interested in. So you may have to learn a new language on the fly. But you should understand basic data structures and algorithms. Also math through linear algebra is important. And most importantly, as a software engineer, you need to understand how to solve problems. Then languages are just tools to solve them.
Reply:Well, if you manage to learn C++ properly, you should learn the most useful libraries for it, as C++ is probably the most powerful language available. (Well maybe C is better for drivers..meh).

Here is a list:

Win32 API -Allows you to make GUI using C++ on Windows,

lets you handle processes, threads, user input, make video game cheats..loads of stuff

Winsock - Lets you make networked programs

Direct3D - Lets you make 3D programs.

Fmod - Sound library used by many professional game designers

Various other useful ones like zlib, libpng, etc..

Of course, this depends on what you want to do with your programming. I also suggest you learn Perl, as it's a good language with which to quickly develop small utilities and text handling / administration programs. If you get into web design, you should learn Flash, Javascript, SQL, and PHP.

I advice against learning Java unless you must, since it sucks. (C++ is wayy better, although not as portable.) A computer engineer should know C,MIPS, and x86 assembly. These are relatively low level and are what engineers often have to deal with. (The ones you listed are high level and are used mainly for Web development.) The most popular languages are C/C++, C#, and Java.

C# is also good for rapid development, but the user must have .net framework installed...so that might reduce the portability of your programs. I would suggest you learn C# instead of Java because it's portable on all machines with .net installed (Like java needs the Java virtual machine installed) but is much faster and simpler, but just as powerful. Good luck.

Note: Idk where you plan on learning your programming, but I'd like to let you know I have learned all of these except PHP and SQL through the sole use of Google.

C# Threading question.?

I created a work thread using the Thread class. In that thread a UdpClient reveives datagrams and writes them to an xml file.

The problem is that when I close the main window the work thread doesnot exit and I have to terminate the process in the task manager. Can anyone help me out? Thanks a million!

BTW: Is there anyway I can compile my c# program into binary machine code so that I can run it on a PC without .Net runtime?

You need to set the IsBackground property on the thread to true.

I don't know why, but they decided to make threads foreground by default which means that they are not terminated by main thread exit.

In response to your second question, Microsoft has an incubation project dealing with compiling managed code to something that has no Fx dependency. I can't provide any details other than you might see something like that in the future but it does not exist right now.

C# StyleSheet Object?

Hi All,

I am developing some asp.net pages where I am constructing the components on the fly. The two components I am using are the Infragistics UltraWebTab and UltraWebList control. Inside the tabs I am placing panels, images, items etc to build up content from a database.

I would like to skin these components using cascading style sheets which I have already created. The problem I am having his how to import and use the cascading style sheets using c#. I have examples from infragistics that suggest inserting the style sheets into the aspx page code but I may want to drive the skins using an XML file to set the skin name at a later date.

If someone could tell me which class to use to import/attach the css files I would be very grateful. Code samples or a link to examples would be much appreciated.

Anyways, back to framework 1.1. the href is the part of the LINK tag that should be set at runtime so we use simple databinding.

1) In you aspx page use the following syntax

But then we need to operate on the two sets (remove dups, etc.) and, ideally, return a SQL result set to the client app.

So questions:

* Can we make a SOAP call using C# from within SQL Server?

* Can SQL Server return the combined results as a standard results set?

Hi Scott, you may be trying to ask a question that is way above your head, and my head too, as I also have a similar question open that no one has dared answer yet for several days.

Since there is no good answer here either, after 2 days let me just "attempt" for an answer:

SOAP is used to communicate between the "webservice" (an application running at your remote site where your 2 sqlserver databases are) and "webservice client" (an application at your site). You don't care what language the remote "webservice" is written in. The "webservice client" at your site is perhaps written in C#. Whoever is administering the remote "webservice" will have to

i) add a new function to the application according to your specification to query the 2 sqlserver data bases (using SQL commands or running prewritten stored procedures) to cleanup duplicates;

ii) provide you with the new "function name" - aka "method" in oop jargon, and parameters it needs from you to call the function. He will typicaly provide this to you as a WSDL file. WSDL = Web Service Definition Language.

Since you are responsible for administering your site, you will need to write a "webservice client" or modify an existing one (written in C# ?) to call the function provided to you by the remote administrator. To make this call you will need to construct a SOAP message from your C# program - as I mentioned earlier SOAP is the standard for communication between "webservice" and "webservice clients". BTW, if you are writing a new client from scratch you may write it using any language you are comfortable with, as long as the language supports sockets, and you have a SOAP toolkit for that language. SOAP toolkit is a set of prewritten functions and APIs for your language, that makes it easy to construct SOAP messages; you do not want to waste time or introduce added complexities by attempting to construct SOAP messages from scratch. Sending a SOAP message is only half the story, your client application will also have to parse a SOAP message coming back from the remote "webservice"; again a SOAP toolkit comes in handy for doing this. Your remote "webservice" will return the SQL resultset enveloped in SOAP.

Now what? It depends on what you are trying to do. Do you have a third sqlserver database at you local site where you are trying to store clean data (no dups)? If so, your client application may write out a XML file with the clean recordsets, and a separate step from sqlserver will import records from the recordset. A better approach may be for the client application to directly invoke SQL commands to write the resultset to your sqlserver database.

Next question is, how will your client application be invoked to initiate the whole process? You decide. You could invoke it from command line, a GUI interface, or maybe even from your local sqlserver - I think it can invoke any program that can be invoked from a command line, you will need to check this.

Now here is the ultimate question you should ask - why are you using a "webservice" to access the remote databases? You could do a RPC to remote server, execute SQL to query the 2 databases and get the resulting recordset back in your local machine just like that. The only reason I can guess is that the remote server is behind a "firewall", and most administrators will feel oozy opening up their RPC port. Webservices are great, because they communicate over HTTP with SOAP.

I dont want to indulge in Java as well as C#/VB. SAX Programming in C#/VB?
Java is the preferred language for implementing SAX because .NET has the XMLReader object which in some ways does everything SAX parsers do, but with a bit more flexibility. For that reason, you find very few SAX parsers even written for .NET.

I did manage to come across a port of SAX over to C# and have provided the link below, but as for books or sources that talk about it, I think they are very scarce and I have not see any material on it.

Hope this page can at least push you into the right direction with finding more info. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I would suggest performing some kind of directory look up before loading the file, and then assigning the correct path to the xml file before trying to open it. In C#, it is something liek 'CurrentDirectory.GetCurrentDirectory()" or something like that. Anyway, you can either get the directory the project is in, or, you can assign the directory path statically, then concatenate to the file path for the xml. Hope this helps...

The path to your project directory can be accessed by using the static HttpRuntime.AppDomainAppVirtualPath property in .NET; however, the .NET folks have taken it one step further and allowed you to use the tilde [~] key as a shortcut/placeholder for the above property. Example:

dataSet.ReadXml("~/File.xml"); // C#

dataSet.ReadXml("~/File.xml") // VB

This code will search for the xml file in the root directory of your application, which should be where your Default.aspx resides.

There are many ways to do this, but my suggestion is to use an HTTP Handler. If you are using ASP.Net 2.0, you can create a file in the App_Code directory that implements the IHttpHandler. Here is a simple example:

What type of application should I use for large XML data processing?

I am using Flash to create a form application where people can select up to 4 querying options (using comboboxes), hit a submit button and retrieve data from an XML file based on their selections. The data they receive becomes a list of titles linked to corresponding PDFs that are located on a CD. All of this will eventually be on a CD, hence the reason for Flash and not PHP or something web-based. Because of usability reasons I am pretty limited in my options, but I am having such a frustrating time with Flash because of the size of the XML file and other factors (mainly I don't agree with actionscript for this kind of project).

Does anyone know of a better way or have any suggestions? VB? AJAX? C? At this point, I don't really care what language, but if someone has done anything similar and thinks they might have a better solution than Flash, please let me know.

ajax falls apart on a cd, nothing is mime-typed properly to get xml as xml. ajah, still works.

c %26amp; vb programs need different versions for different operating systems, mac/xp/linux/vista/dos.

the size of the xml matters to all web based apps, 4meg is the largest that you can be sure will work for all browsers.

Whatever you do, make sure the search is fast, optimized for the data, and doesn't read through the full dataset for each search.

Flash is cute stuff, but will all your users have it installed?

UPDATE:

You would have to break down that 4.3 meg file!!! depending on what it looks like, shorter tag names, more attributes and less tags, or discarding the xml in favor of tab delimited data would work!

I already know HTML. I know flash and understand actionscript, but could not make anything fancy without any tutorials at the moment. I have used XML in my flash slideshow I made once. there are all these other languages, as far as I know, CGI and ASP and PERL do basically the same thing.. so which should I learn.. do i need to know them all... what is PHP? aghh... I need help =( I also want to learn C++. Object oriented whatever that means ( i know u can make games in it). Is flash object oriented too? AGHHH

Not quite. CGI is a standard of sorts, that allows programs to be run by webservers. You can have CGI used by any programming language that supports it: Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP, even C++ if you do some exotic programming.

ASP (I'll talk about ASP.NET actually) is really a platform for writing dynamic websites/web applications. Complex websites have their HTML autogenerated, and you can use ASP (typically by using a .NET language like C# or VB.NET) for a programming language.

Perl is a general purpose language. It's extremely useful for text manipulations, but because it is basically a very powerful and vast language. That makes it suitable for everything from basic scripts to whole web applications. You typically use Perl for web applications as a CGI script or with mod_perl (for Apache webservers). Perl is comparable to C# in that they are programming languages.

"what is PHP?"

Another server side programming language. Unlike C#, or Perl, it is not intended to be used outside of web programming. It's very popular especially because it is both free and has a very low barrier of entry.

"do i need to know them all"

No. You need *a* server side language to write web applications. Note my use of the singular in language. You may use more than one in very powerful/commercial programs, but to start with you can rely on just one.

"so which should I learn."

Take a good stock of web programming languages. You get PHP, Java, ASP.NET (C#, VB.NET), Perl, Python, and Ruby. I recommend Python or Ruby because they are high level languages, are general purpose languages, are mainstream, and have a low barrier to entry. PHP comes next as my recommendation, or perhaps C#/ASP.NET.

C++ is a general purpose programming language. It's more suitable for lower level/systems programming tasks. It's very powerful, and it can be used to write everything from operating systems to a webserver or modules for a webserver. It's used to write quite a bit of programs used on your computers. It's a compact language, but very difficult to master.

Object oriented just reflects a programming paradigm. It's no magic bullet or one size fits all solution.

I don't recall, but I think it is to some extent. Do you have the notion of classes and objects (I think you do)? Then you have the ideas of object oriented programming.

If you're going for C++, get a book from ACCU's review list (http://accu.org/index.php/book_reviews?u... ). I recommend C++ Primer by Stanley Lippman or Accelerated C++ by Koenig.

If you're going for Python: http://python.org/ . Really spend some time there, as they have quite a bit of documentation and resources.

Reply:HTML(which you know) and XML is a must, then I would recommend learning either or of ASP or PHP, My preference being PHP. JS would defiantly be a nice plus, but its not as needed as the rest for web dev.

C++ is not flash based, and a great codding language to learn. Some people prefer Visual Basic .NET, but I would go with C++ Myself.

Here is a good place to start. I tend to download open source web applications such as PHP-Nuke, osCommerce, or any scripted application. Try backwards engineering the programs. Be aware that there is a lot of trial and error. You will love your undo button when attempting to "teach" yourself any scripting language.

Reply:I've got good news for you: you won't need ANY money to learn! The net has so many tutorials and free resources these days that you should get by fine without spending any cash.

You don't need to learn all of the languages you mentioned- although I guess it depends on what you want out of it. In my opinion it's better to know a lot about one language than a little about many, to start with at least. Then once you know a language like the back of your hand it's generally pretty easy and quicker to learn others.

I'm not really an expert but from what I gather the best technologies to get into right now are Java and .NET (money-wise at least), but if you're just starting out then I recommend having a go with PHP (can still be pretty well paid)- it's pretty simple to use and very powerful, and there are thousands of tutorials and free scripts on the net because it's become so popular.

You won't even need a website to test your scripts if you set up your computer with the right software. If you go for PHP, a good package to use is WAMP (www.wampserver.com). This will install all the things you'll need to run PHP scripts locally on your PC. There's also a version for the Mac call MAMP.

(that reminds me, you really should look into learning a database language too- mysql is very good and free, and is also included with WAMP and MAMP)

As far as Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) goes, it's just a method of coding that is seen as very efficient to maintain. PHP5 is fully OOP capable so you'd do good to learn this way of programming, especially if you intend to move over to Java which requires it.
